North West LHIN Hears Stories, Priority Areas of Residents Region-Wide during the Picture Your Health: Your Future Campaign
Feedback received will help to inform the development of the LHIN’s Integrated Health Service Plan 2019-2022
October 16, 2018 – The North West LHIN engaged and listened to 1, 956 residents compared to 700 in 2015 on how they would like to see the future of health care during the Picture Your Health: Your Future public campaign.
As a result of in-person and online efforts, the North West LHIN collected 4,105 comments compared to 1,500 comments in 2015 identifying the areas of the health care system that work well and opportunities for improvement. For example, residents were supportive of Mental Health and Addictions Nurses (MHAN) in schools, the use of telemedicine in order to reduce patient travel, and positive collaborations between service providers and cross-sector organizations to provide innovative, wrap-around patient supports.
Areas of improvement identified include: Home and Community Care (including more training and recruitment of personal support workers, increased caregiver supports and respite services); Long-Term Care (more beds and increased staff to better meet patient needs); Mental Health and Addictions; Seniors Care; Assisted Living; Access to Primary Care (particularly access to family doctors); and Patient Transportation (opportunities to reduce the need for travel; better travel coordination and improved transfer services).
Between March 12, 2018 and May 7, 2018, the people of Northwestern Ontario had an opportunity to participate in a total of 34 engagement sessions in 12 municipalities. Of the 34 engagement sessions, 19 community workshops, including 6 Francophone sessions hosted in support and collaboration with the Réseau du mieux-être francophone du Nord de l'Ontario. The engagement sessions were held in Marathon, Kenora, Thunder Bay, Atikokan, Sioux Lookout, Geraldton, Ignace, Dryden, Manitouwadge, Longlac, Red Lake and Fort Frances. In addition to various LHIN-led stakeholder meetings, including Sub-region Planning Tables, the North West LHIN hosted informational booths at a variety of health fairs, conferences and forums across the region. The LHIN engaged with Indigenous Communities through survey, community events and workshops.
Dr. Rhonda Crocker Ellacott, CEO of the North West LHIN, is grateful for the valuable feedback received as a result of the campaign.
“Thank you to the residents of Northwestern Ontario for providing your feedback on health care services,” she says. “Patient stories are core to the work we do at the North West LHIN, and I am overwhelmed by the number of stories shared over the eight week campaign. The quality of feedback received reiterates the importance of the patient, family and caregiver perspective as we continue to plan for the health care system in our region.”
Along with in-person engagement activities, the campaign offered opportunities for the people of Northwestern Ontario to provide feedback online through the North West LHIN’s engagement hub, survey and social media. 358 survey responses both online and offline were received. A print copy of the survey was distributed at each engagement session and shared widely with interested residents and organizations.
During the campaign period, the North West LHIN Facebook page reached nearly 6,000 users, while the LHIN’s Twitter account was able to accumulate more than 20,000 impressions in an eight week period. The LHIN Instagram page, which was created for the campaign, garnered 83 followers since its creation.
Director of Communications and Engagement Petronilla Ndebele reflects back on a successful campaign, but also looks forward to continuous engagement across the region.
“I’m very proud of this campaign and what it was able to achieve over an eight week period,” says Petronilla. “The innovative campaign blended in-person, online and social media tactics to ensure that we heard from as many residents across the region as possible. Engagement with the people of Northwestern Ontario is an ongoing priority of the North West LHIN and we look forward to continuing the momentum that’s been built.”
Comprehensive reports illustrating the themes that emerged in each community, as well as the commonalities and differences between communities will also be produced. The data and resident perspectives are being considered in the drafting of the Integrated Health Service Plan (IHSP) 2019-2022, which will come into effect on April 1, 2019. The IHSP assists the North West LHIN in its decision-making about health system transformation, health service delivery, and funding allocations over a three-year period.
